Background

The Martha Wood Scholarship was started and first awarded in 2005.  This scholarship is in honor of long time NCENA member Martha Wood.  The scholarship application period opens May 1 with the deadline for submission of applications is no later than July 15 of each year.  Listed below is an overview of the scholarship information.

Mission

To enhance the delivery of emergency nursing care by providing advanced educational opportunities in the form of tuition costs to emergency nurses in North Carolina.

Types of Scholarships

  • Undergraduate: those RNs who are pursuing a BSN or higher program who aspire to practice in emergency nursing.
  • Graduate: those RNs who are pursuing an advanced nursing degree at an accredited institution who aspire to practice in emergency nursing.
  • EMS: EMT or EMT-Paramedic who is pursuing a RN degree who aspires to practice in emergency nursing.

Amount Awarded

  • There are 2 scholarships awarded. Each scholarship is in the amount of $1,000.
  • This is a one time scholarship award amount.
  • Check(s) will be made payable to the nursing institution the recipient is attending and will be sent directly to the nursing institution.

Eligibility

  • Registered nurse or EMT/EMT-Paramedic residing in North Carolina.
  • Applicants MUST be an ENA member (National, Senior, Military, or Affiliate) at time of application.
  • Deadline to apply is July 15. The recipient(s) will be announced at the August NCENA General Assembly meeting.  Recipient(s) will also be notified via email.
  • Proof of acceptance into an undergraduate or graduate program along with proof of at least one year nursing experience. EMS personnel are required to provide proof of current certification at the time of submission along with proof of at least one year EMS or emergency nursing experience. An address and the name of the accredited nursing institution the applicant will be attending must be included with the application.

Application Process

All application and supporting documentation materials must be submitted with the initial application by the July 15 deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Applications must include the following:

  • Resume or CV
  • Statement of Professional/Educational Goals (500-750 words, Must include applicability to emergency nursing)
  • Minimum of two professional letters of recommendation, including contact information.  These references may be employers, colleagues, instructors, etc.
  • Verification of tuition costs - copy of school's official course catalog
  • Copy of acceptance letter if not already enrolled in the program.  If already a currently enrolled student, submit a copy of your most recent transcript.
  • Submit the above requirements via email to the NCENA Awards Committee at awards@northcarolinaena.org no later than July 15.
  • Applications will be reviewed by the NCENA Awards Committee.

Determination Criteria

  • Content/clarity of goal statement (45%).
  • Professional and community involvement (45%).
  • GPA - emphasis will be placed on science/nursing courses (10%).
